The Art of Denial
If I asked would you like to live in your home for the rest of your days, the answer would be an overwhelming yes. If I asked have you thought or done anything to make your home safer, it is typically a no.
I meet a lot of clients every week, the majority of which are returning from rehab and it is the first time they have thought about home safety, particularly in the bathroom.
Whether we like it or not we are aging (see my gray hair as a prime example) and that comes with a whole set of challenges. You cannot prevent every eventuality, but a simple grab bar in the shower now, safety strips on the floor could be the difference to a great spring and summer enjoying the grandkids, or a trip to the ER and weeks of rehab.
The biggest comment I get is ‘oh I don’t need any of that stuff yet’, typically meaning grab bars. Unfortunately, you don’t need them until you need them just like insurance.
The good news is that there are products out there that don’t have to look like a hospital, look good and you won’t even think of them as safety bars every time you use them.
And remember if you have those suction cup bars, please throw them away, they will fail, they are no substitute for something anchored securely.
Look around your home start thinking now and if you need assistance call a professional for an evaluation, which should be at no cost.
